Hardinfo2
Published in 2024, Hardinfo2 is the successor to the 2003 created program Hardinfo. Being a graphical tool, Hardinfo provides easy access to exhaustive information about the hardware on which Linux is running, and it may also create a report about its findings in HTML format. The whole thing is rounded off by the option of running several CPU and FPU benchmarks.
Disable the theme
For better readability you may want to disable the colourful backgrounds of Hardinfo2. You can do so in the menue by choosing View > Theme > Disable Theme.
Installation
The program can be installed directly from Ubuntu’s Universe package source:
sudo apt install hardinfo
Since Ubuntu 24.10, this command installs hardinfo2, because hardinfo is merely a transitional package.
Alternatives
If you prefer to find out about the hardware in the console, for example to check whether the provider has actually installed the promised RAM bars on a remote rental server, use the command line tool lshw instead. Another way to analyze the hardware is provided by dmidecode. As the name suggests, it evaluates the DMI (Desktop Management Interface) table of the BIOS, which the kernel also uses for hardware detection at system startup.
